Susan Swanton is the Executive Director of Maine Marine Trades Association. Ms. Swanton began her career in the marine industry in 1979. For nearly twenty years she worked primarily as a service manager in small boatyards located on Maine’s southern coast. Other industry experience includes managing a major marine retail operation and inside sales work for a marine wholesaler.
In 1997 she accepted her current position as Executive Director of the Maine Marine Trades Association – a statewide organization that represents approximately 150 member firms that are engaged in all aspects of boat building, repair and service. During her tenure in this position, she has played a significant role in creating the Maine Marine Trades Apprenticeship Program, the Maine Clean Boatyards & Marinas Program (the first in the nation to be housed in a trade association) and a number of other environmental initiatives in partnership with EPA Region 1 and Maine Dept. of Environmental Protection including the Clean Marine Diesel Program and the New England Clean Marine Engines Initiative. In addition, she was instrumental in the creation of the Marine Systems Training Center, a program of the MMTA which focused on providing high quality, high demand training for incumbent workers and co-chaired Maine’s North Star Alliance Initiative, $14.4M federal grant. She has served on the National Skills Coalition Leadership Council and is a member of Business Leaders United for Workforce Partnerships. Swanton has also participated in a Policy Briefing for Congress at the request of the Senate Oceans Caucus. She is a Trustee of the Landing School of Boatbuilding and Design.
Recognitions/Appointments: New England Region Environmental Merit Award, Reciprocal Career Exchange with NZ Marine, Appointed to State of Maine Workforce Investment Board by Gov. John E. Baldacci. Recipient of ABBRA's Commitment to Training Award and the 2017 Dennis Snow President's Award.
